A Metaphor for Weblogs

A biological metaphor of the flow of knowledge:

Think of an organization as a single-celled animal. Blogs increase the surface area of the cell, help nutrients flow across its membrane, and promote multicellular cooperation.

This is a helpful picture of the gain that comes to an organisation from an open knowledge culture. Our usual instinct however is to withhold, to hoard, and to control.
